The future of payment in Vietnam’s Fintech market
Vietnam’s fintech market is no longer emerging – it is one of the most dynamic digital financial services markets in Southeast Asia. The next phase of growth will be defined less by user acquisition and more by the quality of products, regulatory sophistication, and the ability to monetize at scale.
Setting the scene
Over the past ten years, Vietnam has moved from a cash-heavy, low-penetration payments market to one in which a majority of urban adults use a digital wallet at least monthly. The shift has been driven by three forces: smartphone penetration crossing 84%, surging QR code transactions, and aggressive subsidization by major e-wallets seeking scale.
Where the market is heading
Three trends will shape the next three years:
- Consolidation. The current landscape of nearly 50 licensed e-wallets is not sustainable. Increasing regulatory requirements and intensifying competition are likely to accelerate e-wallet market consolidation, creating opportunities for selective strategic combinations
- From acquisition to profitability. Most major players have now reached scale. The next question for the market is which business models can be profitable on a unit-economics basis.
- Banking partnerships. As the SBV tightens the regulatory perimeter around e-money, partnerships with licensed banks will become the dominant route for non-bank players to scale.
Implications for investors and operators
For investors, the market offers fewer but more strategic entry points. For operators, the next phase is about building defensible product moats – credit, wealth, insurance distribution – rather than competing on payment fees alone.
